There are currently just under 1,000 Limousine hire companies operating in the UK with somewhere in the region of 3,500 stretch limousines. With so many different types and coachwork colours of limousines from which to choose, you have a broad spectrum of choice. Stretch limousines fall into two basic categories:

* Limousines that carry up to 8 passengers and chauffeur and

* Limousines that carry over 9 passengers plus crew.

Generally speaking, the larger stretch limousines operating in the UK can legally carry up to 16 passengers, but, there are apparently a further two that are licensed to carry 18 passengers. Should you be in any doubt, please contact VOSA, who will clarify the position.

Eight (8) passenger seats plus chauffeur (SVA / IVA certified) stretch limousines include the following types:

* 120 inch stretch Chrysler 300

* 120 inch stretch Lincoln Towncar

* 120 inch stretch Cadillac

* 120 inch stretch Hummer H3

* 72 inch stretch Ford Expedition

Please note - a number of 8 passenger seat stretch limousines, whilst not being SVA or IVA certified, are currently still legal. Such limousines can only be licensed through their local council.

Sixteen (16) passenger sets plus chauffeur (COIF certified) stretch limousines include the following types:

* 180 inch stretch Hummer H2 Limousines

* 200 inch stretch Hummer H2 Limousines

* Hummerzine Limousines

* Grand Illusion Limo Cruisers

* Starfleet Limo Cruisers

When choosing a limousine there are a few questions you should ask yourself:

1. For what event do I need a limo? (weddings, proms etc.).
2. How many passengers will need to travel in the one limo? (the smaller the limo, the less it should cost).
3. What size of limousine should I consider? (will it be able to navigate the roads and get to the venue).
4. Do I need the vehicle price to be inclusive, by the hour or on a collection & return basis?

We have only given some samples of limousine types that fit legally into the two basic categories . Always remember - there are exceptions to the rule. Some limousines not described above will also have passed all the relevant SVA, IVA and COIF certification required by UK law.

If you are ever unsure about a particular limousine's legality, always ask to see the operator's licence. If you are still concerned, then call either the operator's local council or the Department for Transport as appropriate, for confirmation.
